Mar 5, 2026Overall, becoming a business owner has been an incredibly informative experience. For anyone evaluating a franchise opportunity, I’d share a few key recommendations: 1. Have more capital than you think you’ll need. The expenses listed in Item 7 of the FDD cover opening the business and a few months of working capital - not the full runway to profitability. 2. Start as a full-time owner. Semi-absentee ownership is earned after the business is established and a strong team is in place. It’s rarely a sustainable starting point unless you have a highly capable general manager who is incentivized with equity or a meaningful revenue share. 3. Remember that as a franchisee, you are still a business owner. A franchisor provides structure, marketing support, and access to a network of owners running the same model, but they are not running the business for you. In my opinion, those pre-established systems and the support from a network of other business owners is what makes the franchise fee and ongoing royalties worth it. 4. Expect a learning curve. Business ownership can be intimidating and may mean earning less in the early years, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Over time, if you stay consistent and build the business the right way, both the financial return and your freedom of time will come. Just stay the course!
